About

Founded in 2024, Species of Spaces (SofS) is a Kuala Lumpur-based design practice that explores the boundaries of interior design beyond aesthetics alone.

Each project begins with a question — a prompt to explore, reveal, or reconfigure the relationships between people, objects, and their environments.

Working across residential, hospitality, and commercial spaces, SofS approaches design as a medium through which identities, narratives, and ways of living are discovered and expressed. Through thoughtful spatial composition, carefully curated materials, and considered detailing, each space becomes a reflection of its inhabitants and the relationships that shape their everyday lives.

Design Principle

Three principles guide the work — situational, sensorial, performative.

01. ECOLOGICAL

Spaces of Interdependence

Space is understood as a living ecology of people, objects, materials, and environments, dynamically interconnected through mutual influence and transformation. SofS explores these interdependencies, recognising h

02. SITUATIONAL

Space in Transformation

Spaces are not static enclosures, but evolving conditions shaped by changing contexts and ways of inhabiting. SofS explores spatial transformation to accommodate change, catalyse new possibilities, and support evolving relationships

03. SENSORIAL

Beyond the Visible

Space is experienced through the dynamic interplay between the body and its environment. Through light, materiality, texture, sound, and movement, SofS explores how sensory encounters shape perception, evoke memories, and deepen connections with space.

04. PERFORMATIVE

Staging Experiences

Space becomes a medium for staging experiences, framing perspectives, and revealing or concealing narratives. Through spatial composition and scenographic elements, SofSchoreographs encounters and prompts new ways of perceiving and inhabiting everyday life.
